A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
