The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
